Israel”s Knesset seeks transparency on government talks with Arabs

By KUNA,

Gaza : Fifteen members of the Israeli Knesset external affairs committee have called for holding an urgent session for the legislative assembly to debate in a transparent manner behind-the-curtain talks between the government and the Palestinian authority.

The Israeli newspaper “Haaretz” reported in its Sunday edition that the legislators pressed for holding the extraordinary session of the Knesset to request reports about the informal talks between the government of Ehud Olmert with Mahmoud Abbas’ authority.

They will also request reports by Olmert on recent informal contacts with Syria via Turkey, Haaretz said. But, it indicated that Olmert was not expected to reveal details of the ciritical talks with the Palestinians on “very crucial issues.” The talks have reportedly dealt with resolving issues related to Jerusalem, the refugees, water sharing, the planned independent Palestinian state, and final demarcation of the borders.

Tel Aviv’s reported talks with Syria reportedly deal with the prospect of resuming negotiations that had stopped in the early 90s.

Syria is seeking Israel’s withdrawal from the Golan Heights, which Tel Aviv occupied in the 1967 war with the Arabs.
