Doha : Qatar Red Crescent rushed 30 tons of emergency relief materials for survivors of the recent Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. A relief team from Qatar arrived on a special aircraft in Yangon, Myanmar’s second largest city. The aid kits, worth $300,000, include 1,000 tents, 1,000 kitchen sets and 5,000 one-gallon jerrycans. About 1,000 cyclone-hit families will receive assistance. The cylcone destroyed 58 villages in the south-west region of the country and left over 70,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands homeless or missing.
The QRC relief team, in co-ordination with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, will oversee the distribution of the assistance in co-ordination with the Myanmar Red Cross. Volunteers who undertook the field assessment of the needs will distribute the assistance.
QRC, which aims to offer $1mn to help the cyclone survivors, has also issued an urgent humanitarian appeal. “Please donate what you can. No amount is too small. Each assistance kit costs QR225 and will provide shelter to one family,” an official said. QRC has also invited all who are able, including companies and other commercial enterprises, to donate generously.
