Uttar Pradesh to set up automatic weather stations

By IANS,

Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to set up Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in several districts of the state to promote weather-based agricultural management, an official said Thursday.

“The move intends to help farmers in raising their agricultural yield by informing them about weather changes in advance,” director agriculture-meteorology L.C. Ram told IANS.

AWS will be set up from June. A team of agricultural scientists will go to various districts to locate the sites for AWS.

The met department will rope in several voluntary organisations to help convey the weather forecasts to farmers in far-flung areas.

The department also plans to install Automatic Rain Gauge Stations (ARGSs) in various districts of the state. “The ARGSs would be set up in all the nine agro-climatic zones of UP,” said a senior Met department official.

It decided to issue a weekly bulletin for the farmers to inform them about different methodologies to prevent or minimise loss of crops following sudden changes in weather.
