Mumbai : Extra security arrangements were made in the city following a letter threatening to blow up the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India headquarters in south Mumbai Saturday.
“Extra security was deployed in the city to thwart any terror attack,” a police official said.
In the letter, the anonymous sender claiming to be an activist of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) warned that the LIC Building, called Yogakshema, would be blown up Sunday if the fellow activists arrested from Indore and Lucknow were not released.
The letter was received at the LIC headquarters May 17.
Police pickets were put up at all entry-exist points and many other spots. Policemen checked suspicious vehicles.
Tight security was put up outside sensitive buildings like Mantralaya, the state government headquarters, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Bombay Stock Exchange building, the offices of the Mumbai police commissioner and the Maharashtra insector-general of police, Haji Ali dargah, Mumbadevi temple, Siddhivinayak temple, the airport, railways stations, major shopping malls and plazas, cinema halls and multiplexes.
Earlier in the day, there were threatening calls that turned out to be hoaxes.
