Kathmandu : Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala Saturday formally called upon the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) to take initiative as head of the largest party in the country’s Constituent Assembly to form a new government.
“The prime minister, who also acts as head of the state, has asked Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda to take initiative for a new government in accordance with the constitution,” peace minister and Nepali Congress (NC) vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel told reporters after the meeting.
Koirala made this call during a meeting of three main parties – the CPN-M, Nepali Congress (NC) and the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) – at his official residence at Baluwatar in the Nepali capital of Kathmandu Saturday.
According to news website Nepalnews.com, the meeting focused on issues like formation of the government, amendment in the Interim Constitution, nomination of 26 Constituent Assembly members and appointment of a “ceremonial president”. However, no decision was taken.
Another round of tripartite meeting will take place in Baluwatar Sunday morning to discuss these issues. In that meeting, CPN-M chairman Prachanda will provide an outline on how consensus for a unity government and other issues could be built, Poudel said.
CPN-M emerged as the single largest party after Constituent Assembly elections April 10, bagging 220 seats of the 575 elected seats, while NC won 110 through elections and CPN-UML got 103 seats.
