Governor escapes unhurt in Iraq bomb blast

Baghdad : The governor of the western Iraqi province of Babel, who was on official business in the capital, Sunday escaped unhurt when a car bomb exploded here, wounding at least seven bodyguards and four civilians, an interior ministry source said.

The blast targeted the convoy of governor Salim al-Muslamawi near the Yarmouk Hospital in western Baghdad, damaging two vehicles of his convoy and a nearby civilian car, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Muslamawi is a member of the leading Shia party of Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC) headed by the powerful Shia cleric Abdul Aziz al-Hakim.

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb detonated near a police patrol near the Turkish embassy in the Waziriyah neighbourhood in northern Baghdad, wounding two policemen and three civilians, the source said.

A police vehicle and a civilian car were also damaged by the blast, he said.
