Bayern interested ín a football academy in Bengal

By IANS,

Kolkata : With English clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea showing interest in Indian football, German giants Bayern Munich do not want to be left behind and are planning an academy in Bengal.

Some Bayern players and team manager Uli Hoeness were taken to Burdwan Monday morning, where Bengal Peerless, organisers of Oliver Kahn’s farewell match, are building a new township.

The township has a football ground and a stand for some 500 spectators but that was not to the liking of the Bayern officials. They asked the organisers to come up with a bigger project with three to four grounds, where they can start an academy jointly with Bengal Peerless.

The land belongs to the state government, which is also interested in the project. Minister of Commerce and Industries Nirupam Sen will make a presentation of the project to the authorities of the club.

Bayern Munich is here to take on city giants Mohun Bagan in an exhibition match Tuesday, which will also be veteran goalkeeper Olver Kahn’s last international match.
