Tehran : An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit suburbs of the city of Zanjan in northwestern Iran Tuesday morning, the official IRNA news agency reported. The seismological centers affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered the earthquake at 10:48hours local time (0618 GMT).
There are no reports yet on damage or casualties caused by the earthquake, said the report, adding that relief teams have been sent immediately to the area.
Iran is frequently affected by earthquakes of various magnitudes, as it lies on some of the world’s most active seismicfault lines.
