Madhya Pradesh offers sops to self-help groups

Bhopal : The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to provide interest subsidy, land and other facilities to self-help groups (SHGs) and their associations.

“The purchase rules of government departments and their undertakings would be amended, if need be, to give the above concessions to the SHGs,” an official statement said Tuesday.

It said the decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Monday. The meeting was convened to review the efforts being made for empowerment of SHGs.

“Since about 375,000 SHGs functional in urban, rural and tribal areas of the state could greatly help in ameliorating the economic lot of the families living below poverty line, Chouhan emphasized upon the need to intensify the efforts for empowerment of these groups,” the statement said.

The associations of SHGs are constituted under the Self-Help Groups Promotion Policy in the state through which they would be provided marketing, technical training and financing facilities. They would also promote quality of their products as per the market demand.

The meeting also resolved to make a provision of Rs.100 million in the first supplementary budget for providing loans to SHGs at a subsidised interest rate of five percent.
