Congress suspends Orissa MLA after rape charge

By IANS,

Bhubaneswar : The Congress party Thursday suspended one of its legislators in the Orissa assembly from the primary membership of the party after a woman accused him of raping her in 2006.

The woman from Barpali town in Bargarh district, about 340 km from here, has complained to the police that MLA Subal Sahu had repeatedly raped her when she visited him at Bhubaneswar’s MLA hostel in December 2006.

The woman said he had promised her a government job, according to police officials, who said they had registered a case and had started investigations.

Sahu has denied the allegation and said he was ready for any probe. “It is the handiwork of some of my political opponents. The truth will come out,” the legislator told IANS.

“We suspended Sahu from the Congress party today,” state congress President Jayadev Jena told IANS. “If the charges against him are proved false he will again be taken in the party,” Jena said.
