Israeli Prime Minister in the Tightrope

By Prensa Latina,

Tel Aviv : Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert found himself in the tightrope Wednesday, after Israeli Labor Party and Defense Minister Ehud Barak urged him to resign his post.

Barak said that in the interest of the nation, Olmert should leave his post as Prime Minister, in a press conference in Jerusalem.

“The Kadima Party should make a test of conscience, and choose a substitute. We will do what we can to fix a date for anticipated elections,” he added.

His statements were made after Israeli-US entrepreneur Morris Talansky stated Tuesday he delivered Olmert the amount of 150,000 dollars in the last years.

Olmert recognized he received the money, but he said it was a donation only destined to finance his electoral campaigns, which his own voters now doubt.

A poll published by Israeli newspaper Haaretz and mentioned by other press media said 70 percent of the Israelis does not believe Olmert.

More than two thirds of the Israeli population estimate Olmert is lying the General Prosecutor Office, which is investigating Olmert for corruption.

The poll said 51 percent of the followers of the Kadima Party are convinced the money was not used for electoral objectives.

Olmert was submitted to a similar process last year, because of accusations for corruption and questioning on his policy during the Israeli-Lebanese war in 2006, after which his credibility came down, and lots of resignation requests went over him.

Talansky´s statements and Barak´s exhortations intensified the national public opinion, and some analysts think there is something behind these intrigues.
