Guwahati, India : A river in northeastern India, swollen by heavy rains, burst its banks Thursday, flooding at least 100 villages, officials said, according to AP.
There were no reports of injuries, but large parts of the Dhemaji district in Assam state were cut off after the waters flooded the main road in the region and inundated the villages, said Diwakar Misra, a local government official.
Our disaster management teams are in place and we have pressed wooden rowboats and some motorized boats into service to evacuate anyone stranded, said Misra, adding that the villagers had not been displaced by the floods.
Dhemaji is some 155 miles (250 kilometers) northeast of Guahati, the state capital.
Assam is prone to flooding. Last year, millions of people were forced to temporarily abandon their homes after floods left much of the state under water.
