Stockholm : Reconstruction and domestic security are currently two primary concerns for Iraq, said Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the international compact with Iraq here Thursday, Mottaki said he was happy that the international community felt it was duty-bound to help Iraq achieve a modicum of peace, security, and stability, which are the building blocks for political progress and economic recovery.
Asking the international community to continue its support for Iraq, he affirmed Iraq’s need for a democratic, federal government which bases its policies on guaranteeing personal freedom and respect for the rights of all sects and ethnicities.
He sounded a note of appreciation for efforts exerted by nations neighbouring Iraq that have played a tangible role in assisting Iraq with issues of security and stability, through the convening of conferences at the levels of ministers of foreign affairs or the interior.
Mottaki expressed his country’s willingness to assist Iraq in establishing a solid political process, providing security, and getting on with reconstruction.
But he noted that Iraq’s internal affairs should not be at the whim of foreign intervention.
