Seniora remains as Lebanon’s PM

By Xinhua,

Beirut : Lebanese newly-elected President Michel Suleiman on Wednesday assigned Prime Minister Fouad Seniorato head the next government, said a statement from the presidential palace.

“Following consultations with parliament speaker and with members of parliament (MPs), the president summoned Prime Minister Seniora and assigned him to form the government,” the statement said.

Seniora got 68 votes out of 127 MPs, local New TV reported, adding that the chosen PM would hold consultations to form the new cabinet.

After a long ongoing political crisis in the country turned into violence earlier this month, Lebanese pro and anti-government politicians met in Doha and reached an agreement on May 21, ending a long political deadlock in the country.

The first phase of the agreement led to electing Suleiman as the new president on Sunday after six months of presidential vacuum. While the second step is the formation of a national unity government with veto power for the opposition.

The rival leaders also agreed to adopt 1960 electoral law in the Doha accord.
