UN Sec-Gen to co-chair Iraq Compact meeting in stockholm Thursday

United Nations : UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon left New York late Wednesday for Stockholm where he will co-chair the first Iraq Compact annual review conference scheduled for Thursday, it was announced here.

The meeting will review progress made under the framework of the International Compact for Iraq, which includes on one hand the commitments of Iraq on economic, political and security reforms and, on the other, commitments of the international community to provide financial and other support.

As co-chair of the event, the secretary-general will reiterate in his remarks that the UN, for its part, remains committed to doing all it can to support the people and government of Iraq under Security Council Resolution 1770 which authorised the expansion of UN work in the country.

The conference, to be also co-chaired by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, is expected to close with the adoption of the Stockholm Declaration.

Ban is expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event, including with the Swedish King and Prime Minister, as well as with the British Foreign Secretary, US Secretary of State, Foreign Minister of Italy and Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
