Top Madhya Pradesh officials searched by tax sleuths

Bhopal : Income Tax (IT) department officials Friday conducted searches at several places in Madhya Pradesh targeting top state officials, including Home Secretary Rajesh Rajora, who has since tendered his resignation, official sources here said.

About 40 teams of the income tax department, involving 200 personnel, conducted searches at the premises of senior health department officials and businessmen engaged in the supply of medicines. The raids were carried out in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Neemuch.

Among the officials targeted were Rajora, director (health) Ashok Sharma, director of gas relief and managing director of the Madhya Pradesh Road Transport Corporation Muktesh Varshney, as well as retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) official U.K. Samal and builder-turned-newspaper owner Arun Sehlot.

Though the IT officials refused to divulge the details of any seizures of cash or incriminating documents, they said, “Raids may continue for a day or two”.

The raids were also reportedly conducted at the Jabalpur residence and office of state Health Minister Ajay Bishnoi’s brother Abhay Bishnoi and his partner Abhay Jain, an IT department source said.
