Israeli religious parties rally for Knesset polls

By KUNA,

Gaza : Leaders of Israeli religious parties will meet on Sunday to unify their ranks ahead of the forthcoming Knesset elections.

During their meeting, the leaders of Moledet, Tkuma, Ahi, and Mefdal parties are expected to come up with the formation of a single party, Radio Israel said.

Once fleshed out, the fresh Israeli alliance will handpick a list of its candidates, who will set up a general council involving Jewish rabbis, reserve officers, and university professors, it added.

They vowed to inject fresh blood into their rolls for the general election due to be held in Israel in November.

Since it was announced in Israel that early elections would be held, diverse Israeli political forces, especially left-wingers, have been bracing for winning the largest possible number of the 120-member Knesset (parliament) seats.

Israeli elections are reported to cast more doubts about the future of the peace process between Israel and Syria and Palestine.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was elected successor to outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as leader of Kadima, the largest party in the Israeli parliament.

She had been thought likely to become prime minister last week, but failed to pull together a coalition, putting the country on the road to elections and giving Olmert at least another three months in office.
