Lebanese majority leader expects political understanding between rival groups

By Xinhua,

Beirut : Sunni Majority leader Saad Hariri said that differences between pro-government and opposition groups should not prevent political understanding, As-Safier daily reported Monday.

Hariri made the remarks late Sunday following his meeting with Shiite Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, during which they discussed the steps to achieve progress in national dialogue and defuse tension.

He stressed that his meeting last week with Hezbollah Chief Hasan Nasrallah had paved the way for achieving stability and decreasing tension.

Tension between Sunni and Shiite groups in Lebanon were reported and developed into sporadic clashes which left hundreds killed since last spring.

At any rate, political differences should not develop into street clashes, Hariri added.

Political dialogue is necessary to preserve the country’s unity, stability, security and economic growth, he said.

The second dialogue session among Lebanese leaders is scheduled on Nov. 5 under the auspices of Lebanese President Michel Suleiman in the presidential palace.

The Doha accord signed on May 21 by Lebanese rival leaders, called for a national dialogue aimed at reaching an agreement on the National Defense Strategy.
