Congress seeks more orders for defence shipyard in West Bengal

By IANS,

Kolkata : The West Bengal Congress Tuesday appealed the central government to place more orders for better utilisation of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSEL)’s infrastructure.

“GRSEL is one of the few shipyards in our country which has its own engineering and engine manufacturing division to meet country’s increasing maritime demands – especially those of Indian Navy and Coast Guards,” state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacharya, also the president of GRSEL Officers’ Association, told a press conference.

Bhattacharya said he has also written to Defence Minister A.K. Antony iterating the request.

“I want the minister to look into the matter and expedite the process so that the organisation can meet the coming challenges,” he added.

GRSEL, a mini Ratna Company, has a 125-year history of manufacturing a series of missile corvettes, landing ship tanks, highly advanced Bramhaputra class frigates, fleet replenishment tankers, fast attack crafts, hovercrafts and many other maritime units.

“It’s a matter of regret the GRSEL is presently getting insufficient orders compared to other shipyards in the country,” Bhattacharya said.
