New Delhi: The erstwhile scheme for madrasa modernization has been revamped as “The Scheme for Providing Quality Education in Madrassas (SPQEM)” for the XIth Plan.

Under SPQEM during the period madrasas volunteering for the opportunity to acquire education comparable to the national education system could seek linkages with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for subjects like science, mathematics, social studies, languages etc., says a communication from the Central government.

State Governments would need to send proposals for madrasas to be assisted, as per the guidelines of the revamped scheme.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs last month gave its approval for SPQEM with an expenditure of Rs.325 crore to encourage traditional institutions like Madrassas/Maktabs/Darululooms to introduce science, mathematics, social studies, language and English in their curriculum so that academic proficiency for classes I-XII is attainable for children studying in these institutions, the HRD Ministry release said.
