Ludhiana : The Punjab police Tuesday initiated verification into the claims made by an association of migrants from Bihar that offered a bounty of Rs 5.1 million on the life of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.
The bounty was offered by the Akhil Bharatiya Poorvaanchal Vikas Parishad, a body of migrants from Bihar and other states based in Ludhiana, saying that anyone who killed Thackeray would get the money.
“We don’t even know if some one has genuinely done this. We are trying to verify this and will take action accordingly,” a senior police official told IANS here.
Thackeray had been in the centre of a hate campaign that he started a few months ago in Maharashtra, particularly targeting migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh who are settled in Mumbai and other parts of that state for work.
The migrants body was reported in media saying that the only way to tackle Thackeray’s regionalism politics was to kill him. The media reports quoted the Parishad’s all-India president T.R. Mishra offering the bounty on Thackeray’s head.
The Parishad also threatened to “burn alive” any MNS activist who entered this city.
