Srinagar : Kashmiris, cutting across the party lines, have hailed the US presidential hopeful, Barak Obama’s remarks on the lingering six decade old dispute between India and Pakistan.
Hurriyat Conference even convened an urgent meeting to discuss Obama’s remarks on Kashmir.
In one of his final interviews before the vote, Senator Obama suggested there should be links between solving the conflict in Afghanistan and the long-standing dispute between Pakistan and India over Kashmir.
While the Bush administration has maintained a hands-off approach towards the Kashmir dispute, Senator Obama suggested his administration would be more closely involved in trying to resolve the conflict.
“It was a good omen and encouraging that the US and international community is gradually recognizing the gravity of Kashmir dispute and that pressure was mounting on India and Pakistan to resolve the dispute, which was imperative for peace in South Asia,” said Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, leader of the Hurriyat Conference.
Barack Obama in the interview with CNBC suggested the United States should try to help resolve the Kashmir dispute so that Pakistan can focus on its north-western frontier which is plagued by deadly militancy.
“The most important thing we’re going to have to do with respect to Afghanistan, is actually deal with Pakistan,” Obama said.
