British Government Revokes Thai Ex-Premier Thaksin’s Passport

By Bernama,

Bangkok : The Thai democrat party confirmed Saturday that the British government has revoked visas for Thai ex- premier Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Potjaman, which banned them from entering Britain on their Thai passports.

Sirichoke Sopah, spokesman of the shadow cabinet, showed to reporters a notification letter which was circulated by emails to airlines, according to reports by the Bangkok Post, the Thailand news agency quoted a local English newspaper as saying.

The letter was signed by a British official at the British embassy in Thailand.

An official from the Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying that the ministry has not been officially informed about the matter.

Thanee Thongpakdee, a senior ministry official, said the British government has the right to revoke a visa without clarifying the reasons behind the move.

Pongthep Thepkanchana, spokesman of Thaksin, said he knows nothing about reports that the British government has revoked visas for Thaksin and his wife.

Pongthep said that he believes the reports cannot be true. He also denied knowing the couple’s whereabouts at present.

Thaksin was ousted in a September 2006 coup and is now in exile.
