Serious differences with Dalai Lama envoys: China

By Xinhua,

Beijing : China Monday said serious differences persisted during talks with the private representatives of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama.

Zhu Weiqun, executive vice minister of the United Front Work Department (UFWD) of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, told reporters that the talks were “frank and sincere” but noted that there were serious differences between the two sides.

Du Qinglin, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, met the Dalai Lama’s private representatives, Lodi Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen.

Zhu, UFWD deputy minister Sita and executive vice-chairman of Tibet Pelma Trilek also held talks with them while they were in China from Oct 31 to Nov 5.

Zhu said the Dalai Lama’s representatives during their talks in July had agreed not to support subversive acts of the pro-independence Tibetan Youth Congress or other groups but “Tibetan activists had broken that promise”.

“They supported the Tibetan Youth Congress and other organizations to publicly advocate Tibetan independence and fanned or organized violent criminal activities,” Zhu added.

This month’s talk was the third round between the central government and the Dalai Lama’s private envoys this year. Previous discussions were held in May and July.
