People should come out to protest Maoist attacks: Somnath

By IANS,

Kolkata : Holding that fear had taken hold in the minds of the common man due to the “red terror” of the Maoists, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has urged people to fight against the left-wing insurgents in India.

Condemning the attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s convoy Nov 2, he said it was very unfortunate that Maoists are intensifying attacks in several parts of the nation and were killing innocent people.

“I hope people will realise this and consolidate a protest against this rebel group,” Chatterjee said in an interview aired on a Bengali television news channel ‘Star Ananda’ here Sunday.

“The incidents of Maoist attacks are always condemnable and there should be no politicising of such incidents,” he added.

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had a narrow escape Nov 2 as suspected Maoists triggered a high-intensive landmine blast on the route of their convoy in West Midnapore district. Six policemen were injured, two of them critically, in the landmine explosion.

“Innocent people are more and more falling prey to these rebel attacks. A kind of fear has also been created in the minds of commoners due to the red terror,” Chatterjee said.
