Another UK soldier killed in Afghan war

By IRNA,

London : Another British soldier has been killed in southern Afghanistan, bringing the death toll of UK troops killed in the Afghan war to 125 since 2001.

The soldier was killed when his patrol was hit with an improvised explosive device on Saturday.

Earlier a top British commander in Afghanistan had complained about the type of vehicles used in the Afghan war, blaming the Ministry of Defense for putting the lives of UK forces at risk in the war-ravaged country.

The MoD said in a statement that the soldier was in a routine road move when his vehicle was hit.

The soldier’s death, according to BBC, is the second from the 2nd Battalion the Royal Ghurkha Rifles in just over two weeks.

On Thursday, the latest poll commissioned by BBC indicated that more than two-thirds of Britons think UK troops should leave Afghanistan within a year.

Out of 1,013 people polled, 68 per cent said the UK’s 8,000 soldiers should leave Afghanistan within 12 months.

The number was as high as three-quarters of women and 59 per cent among men questioned.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is reportedly under pressure from the US to send more troops, is due to make a policy statement on Afghanistan when the new parliamentary session begins in December.
