Chennai : The Madras High Court Thursday said the students responsible for last week’s violence at the city law college should be proceeded against impartially without political interference.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly and Ibrahim Khalifullah took a dim view of the inaction on the part of police and the principal of Ambedkar Law College during the Nov 12 violence on the college campus in which three students were injured.
The court asked Advocate General G. Masilamani to assess the problems among the student community in the college and file a detailed report Tuesday.
The bench was hearing a writ petition seeking the court’s intervention to prevent repetitions of such incidents.
Students of the law college brutally assaulted their mates with clubs and iron rods on Nov 12, leaving three seriously injured, while the police stood by mutely. The incident drew widespread criticism from the entire opposition in the state.
It also triggered a war of words between Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Leader of Opposition J. Jayalalitha of the AIADMK. A lawyer of the AIADMK has issued a legal notice to Karunanidhi threatening a defamation suit of Rs.10 million unless he makes an unconditional apology for accusations against the opposition.
