National School to set up center in Kolkata soon

Kolkata, India : The National School of Drama would soon set up a centre in Kolkata to impart training to budding thespians.

“The state government has agreed to the proposal of setting up a NSD centre here,” West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said today during the inauguration of the eight-day-long 8th Theatre Festival (Natyamela) in the city.

NSD would be given a location at Rawdan Square for setting up the centre. However, for the time being the School would impart training programmes, workshops and other activities at Minerva Theatre,” Bhattacharjee said.

The chief minister also assured to provide financial help to theatre groups from across the state.

During the festival, as many as 95 dramas would be staged in several theatre halls across the metropolis. The festival started with Ravindra Nath Tagore’s ‘Kaaler Yatra’ today.

Sixty-three theatre groups from across West Bengal are participating in the festival, organised by the state government and the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre. Theatre groups, one each from Bangalore, Bokaro and Bangladesh are also taking part.

Eminent theatre personalities Sobha Sen, Ashok Mukhopadhyay, Mohit Chattopaddhyay and Sisir Sen were among those who graced the occasion today.
