Chennai : The Tamil Nadu government Wednesday formally cancelled orders to detain senior PMK leader Kaduvetti Guru under the National Security Act.
The move, improving the ruling DMK’s relationship with its erstwhile ally PMK, came within hours of a meeting between Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and PMK legislature party leader G.K. Mani.
The ties between the DMK and the PMK – both constituents of the central United Progressive Alliance (UPA) – had been strained but have warmed up since Monday following Karunanidhi’s attributing PMK founder S. Ramadoss’s offices the convening of an all-party meeting to discuss the Sri Lankan Tamils’ tangle.
S. Ramadoss has publicly espoused the creation of Eelam as “the only possible solution” to the Tamil question in Sri Lanka.
Though the relevant orders withdrawing the detention have been sent to Tiruchirappalli central prison where he is detained, Guru is unlikely to be released till Saturday as he is yet to be granted bail in an attempt to murder case.
Petitions challenging Guru’s detention have been rejected by courts thrice.
Guru was jailed July 10 under the NSA for allegedly making inflammatory statements in January. The move had coincided with the ouster of the PMK from the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance.
Meanwhile, Several lawyers were seen distributing sweets and bursting fire crackers in the precincts of many courts in the state Wednesday to celebrate the 56th birthday of V. Prabhakaran, the supremo of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Pasted posters hailing Prabhakaran and espousing the Eelam cause were also shown on several TV channels.
