Beirut : Lebanese President Michel Suleiman requested modern medium arms from Iran for the Lebanese army to help combat terrorism and maintain national security, local An-Nahar daily reported Wednesday.
The daily said that during the last two days official visit in Iran, Lebanon’s president was not seeking long-range missiles or jet fighters, but only medium arms from the country.
Sources in the accompanying delegation told the daily that the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinijad told his Lebanese counterpart that Iran is ready to support Lebanon with whatever is needed.
Meanwhile, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatoullah Ali Khamenei called on Lebanese factions to unite against Israel during his meeting with the president.
“Over the past 60 years, no Muslim and Arab country have been able to stand against the Zionist regime, but the Lebanese people managed push out the Zionist enemy,” he said, referring to the 33-day Second Lebanese War in summer 2006.
Iran is a main supporter of armed Hezbollah Shiite group in Lebanon, which is also backed by Syria.
The Lebanese president, who is the third one to visit Iran since 1979 Islamic revolution, is trying to shift the Iranian support to the Lebanese state rather than Lebanese parties, the report added.
