London : Britain Thursday updated its travel advisory, asking citizens to avoid “all non-essential travel” to Mumbai until further notice in view of the massive terror attack targeting prominent places in India’s financial capital.
The British government has, however, not stepped up its level of alert on travel to India.
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s advisory on its website said: “On 26 November there have been a series of blasts in a number of sites around Mumbai. Some of these have been in or close to five star hotels in the southern part of the city. Reports suggest as many as 80 dead and up to 250 injured people.”
Police in Mumbai put the toll of those dead at 101. Some British nationals are said to be among the injured.
Britain has also issued an advisory to citizens who are already in Mumbai: “We advise all British nationals in the city to stay indoors until local authorities advise that it is safe to go outside.”
It has asked its citizens to contact the foreign and commonwealth office in London if they are concerned about the welfare of their friends or relatives currently in India. British citizens currently in Mumbai have been advised to call its Delhi office in case of any assistance.
As it is, the foreign office considers current travel to India as unadvisable. The general alert says: “There is a high threat from terrorism throughout India.”
