Mumbai attack would impact US economy: Indian American Senator

By IANS,

New York : An Indian-American senator Thursday said the terrorist attack on Mumbai that began Wednesday and left at least 101 dead and 250 others injured would have an adverse impact on the US economy, which is already under recession.

Satveer Chaudhary, a senator in the US state of Minnesota, said that US and India are natural allies against terrorism and are now growing economic partners.

“Consequently, the strike against India’s financial capital may impact the American economy,” Chaudhary said in a statement. Chaudhary is the only Indian-American senator in the state of Minnesota.

Chaudhary, who was instrumental in a Minnesota trade delegation visiting Mumbai and other Indian cities last year said: “Minnesota trade representatives were scheduled this week to arrive back in Mumbai and elsewhere in India to follow up trade talks from its 2007 trade mission.”

He had also attended the trade mission and brokered India’s first sister-state relationship.

Condemning the terrorist attacks, Chaudhary called on the US to do everything possible to protect US citizens in that area and assist India where appropriate in normalizing the current situation.

Urging calm amongst the India Diaspora worldwide, he said: “Use our wits as much as strength to bring these people justice, exchange all relevant information with authorities and the media, and resist in no uncertain terms any backlash against innocents.”
