Kerala Assembly pays tribute to V.P. Singh

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala Assembly Friday paid homage to former prime minister V.P. Singh, who died in New Delhi after battling a kidney ailment for several years. The house was later adjourned for the day.

Singh, who launched a bold initiative in social engineering while heading the country’s first coalition government during 1989-90, passed away Thursday afternoon and his funeral is slated to take place at Allahabad on Friday. He was 77.

Chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan said Singh fought corruption and was a staunch upholder of secularism. Speaker K. Radhakrishnan described him as one who worked for the poor and down trodden even while battling for his life.

Leader of opposition Oommen Chandy said he would be remembered for his stand on social justice.
