Rs.10 mn for families of security men killed in Mumbai: Modi

By IANS,

Mumbai : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived here Friday, announced a compensation of Rs.10 million for the families of the security personnel who lost their lives fighting terrorists who attacked India’s financial capital.

Modi had come here to pay his last respects to the deceased security men.

“I have come here to pay my respects to the brave and patriotic police officers and security men who laid down their lives fighting the terrorists. My government will provide compensation of Rs.10 million for all their families,” Modi told mediapersons.

Although he wanted to meet the family of Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, who was also killed in the operations Wednesday night, Modi said he could not meet them since they were in Pune.

Karkare, ‘encounter’ specialist Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte were amongst the 125 people killed when terrorists attacked 10 places in the city Wednesday night.

Fourteen police personnel have been killed in the attacks, in which 327 people have been injured.

Indicating that Pakistan may be behind the terror attack, Modi said: “This is for the first time that Pakistan had used the sea route (to infiltrate the city)”.

“The country had a lot of expectation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s speech Thursday in such a time of crisis. However, the speech did not have much to offer,” he added.
