Berlin : The main purpose of the new US-Iraqi security accord is to “strengthen American regional hegemony,” said a veteran Syrian journalist based in Germany.
Talking to IRNA in Berlin on Saturday, Ahmad Afani of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said, “The security agreement is nothing more than prolonging the US occupation of Iraq. The security deal is aimed at strengthening American regional hegemony.”
The Western efforts to seek hegemony in the Middle East have not really helped the people in the region, the 79-year-old journalist added.
Afani called for the indictment of US President George W. Bush for the illegal occupation of Iraq.
“I condemn the occupation of Iraq which violates international law and human rights and I hold US President George W. Bush responsible for it. He should face trial in an international court.”
“I don’t know whether the Iraqi people will accept the latest security deal, however the US occupation has to end and the Iraqi nation deserves to receive compensation from the US,” he added.
The Arab journalist urged a “new way of thinking” in the western world which would not entail imperialistic and colonial policies.
“A segment of the western political elites are still clinging to those imperialistic and colonial policies and simply can let go of them,” he said.
The Syrian correspondent stressed that as part of the new thinking in the West, the UN should also be able to fulfil its duties.
“Bush has made a farce of the UN which also needs to be reformed.
Unfortunately, UN reform plans have been reduced to merely assigning seats in the UN Security Council,” Afani said.
