Abbas starts four-day visit to India

Ramallah : Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will on Monday embark on a four-day visit to India, Palestinian sources from Abbas office said.

The visit is part of an Asian tour that will also take Abbas toSyria and Sri Lanka, the sources added.

Indian President Pratibha Patil will host Abbas at dinner and will discuss the country’s role in pushing the Middle East peace process, according to the sources.

Before leaving for India, Abbas said India was “a role model” for the Palestinian people.

At New Delhi, Abbas will also meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice President Hamid Ansari along with other key politicians.

Abbas and the Indian prime minister will lay the foundation stone of the new Palestinian embassy in New Delhi. The embassy would be built upon an Indian grant.

Abbas’ tour comes as parties relevant to Middle East peace process will meet in Egypt to assess the situation before the current U.S. administration quits.
