Israel willing to withdraw from Lebanese border village

By NNN-KUNA,

Beirut : Command of the United Nations peace-keeping Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has notified Lebanese authorities about Israel’s desire to withdraw from the frontier village of Al-Ghajar, a daily newspaper said.

The Arabic-language mass-circulation, “An-Nahar,” reported in its Monday edition that the command of the international peace-keeping force informed Lebanese officials about information indicating Israel’s desire to withdraw from the occupied sector of the border village and that might be carried out by November 21.

The UNIFIL urged the Beirut authority to take necessary action to ensure security in the village and surrounding areas and be ready for the prospected Israeli pull-out, An-Nahar said.

Al-Ghajar is situated in a mountainous spot adjacent to the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

Israel withdrew from most of southern Lebanese regions in 2000 following years of bitter fighting with Lebanese resistance fighters.

There has been some controversy as whether the frontier village belongs to Syria or Lebanon.
