US Blockade Hinders Cuban Education

By Javier Rodriguez Roque, Prensa Latina

Havana : US economic, trade and financial blockade against Cuba includes an aggression on the educational system in the Island, internationally considered one of the greatest achievements of the Cuban Revolution.

The negative impact of the punitive US measure affects specifically high-level performance schools and especial educational centers for handicapped people.

Cuba presented a report before the United Nations exposing the situation caused by the financial restrictions established in the blockade that include all Cuban trade operations with products from the United States or subsidiary companies based in third countries.

The Caribbean nation was obliged to expend an extra $2,505,600 buying supplies for the 2008-2009 school-year because it had to trade in far-off markets.

The document included restrictions to purchase US-made educational and computer material, hearing devices, spare parts, and to access Internet database and bibliography plus prohibition of US students to attend postgraduate courses in Cuban universities.
