New Delhi : Describing the Indo-US nuclear agreement as the “singular triumph” of Indian diplomacy, Minister of State for Industry Ashwani Kumar said the deal will be “decisively vindicated” in the peoples’ court.
Kumar said on Thursday that the primacy of the 123 Agreement, which recognises India’s sovereign right to test a nuclear device, has been maintained and the killer amendments to the Senate resolution have been negatived by the US Senate itself.
“This is a singular triumph of Indian diplomacy and its finest hour in which all Indians must rejoice,” he said.
Kumar termed as a “historic development” the signing of the 123 Agreement into a law and the accompanying statement of US President George W Bush.
“The (Indo-US nuclear) Agreement … Will be decisively vindicated in the peoples’ court and those opposing the deal would be shown their place by the people of India,” he said.
The agreement will subserve India’s quest for clean energy for its environment and development imperatives, Kumar said adding that it would also strengthen New Delhi’s quest for a permanent membership of the UN Security Council.
Indian scientists will now have access to nuclear technology and fuel, the absence of which had caused a setback for the development of our nuclear capabilities over the past 34 years, he said.
The minister said the agreement will also help India meet its obligations regarding the Millennium Development Goals set by the UN and also facilitate faster industrialisation and employment generation throughout the country.
