Shops set afire in West Bengal town over man’s death

Kolkata : Irate mobs ransacked and set fire to shops in a West Bengal town Saturday after a man was killed in a clash between members of two Durga Puja committees the previous night.

The incident took place at Makardah area of Domjur town in Howrah district.

“Some of the people of Makardah ransacked shops and set fire to at least three of them Saturday morning after Pradip Kachuri, a resident of the area, was killed during a clash between members of two Durga Puja committees Friday,” District Superintendent of Police Niraj K. Singh told reporters.

“Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were called to control the situation. An additional police team has been deployed in the area,” Singh added.

A clash broke out between two local puja committees Friday after immersing the Durga idol regarding who would offer puja at the local temple afterwards. During the clash, Kachuri, 45, was kicked repeatedly in the stomach and was declared dead after he was taken to the Domjur Primary Health Centre.

However, no one has been arrested so far.
