Lucknow : A man and his wife who were carrying firecrackers on a motorcycle were killed in an explosion Friday when their vehicle skidded on the outskirts of this Uttar Pradesh capital, police said.
The explosion took place at about 2.30 p.m. in Mallhaur village in outskirts of this city.
The couple, Rajendra Gupta and Sunita Gupta, ran a road-side eatery in Gomti Nagar locality.
“They also used to sell fire crackers from their outlet during Diwali and were carrying four handbags full of fire crackers when the incident took place near the Mallhaur railway crossing,” S.C. Dubey, assistant superintendent of police, told IANS.
The couple tried to cross the railway track when the motorbike skidded and fell causing the explosion, he added.
“Both died on the spot and several others, waiting for the crossing to open, sustained minor injuries,” Dubey added.
Lucknow senior superintendent of police Akhil Kumar denied any terror angle saying: “They (bombs) were fire crackers and mild crude bombs.”
“The injured are out of danger and were discharged after first aid from government hospital,” inspector I.P. Singh told reporters.
