Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government Saturday revised the sugarcane purchase price for all sugar mills in the state from Rs.125 to Rs.140 per quintal.
Making the announcement at a press conference here, Chief Minister Mayawati said: “The fixation of price was done after an exhaustive study of various factors and in consultation with all the parties involved.”
To a query on how the state would ensure implementation of the price by sugar mills who have a history of entering into legal battles against the government recommended cane price, state Chief Secretary Atul Gupta told IANS: “This exercise of making the mill-owners sit across the table with sugarcane growers and market experts has been undertaken for the first time by any government here, so we see no cause for litigation.”
Meanwhile, writ petitions moved by some sugar mill owners were still pending before the Supreme Court as well as the Allahabad High Court against the earlier price of Rs. 110 per quintal fixed by the state government for the year 2006-07 as well as Rs.125 fixed for the year 2007-08.
