MNS chief Raj Thackeray arrested

By IANS,

Mumbai : Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray was arrested early Tuesday by Mumbai police in execution of a warrant issued by a Jamshedpur court, a party official said.

Thackeray was arrested from a government guesthouse in Ratnagiri district, some 250 km south of Mumbai, at about 4 a.m.

Other party workers like Sanjay Ghadi and Pravin Darekar were also arrested, a party office bearer told IANS.

This is the second time in eight months that Thackeray has been arrested for his anti-north Indian tirade. He will be presented before a magistrate in the Bandra court at around 2 p.m.

Thackeray’s arrest has resulted in violence all over Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra, with reports of stone pelting and arson by MNS supporters.

MNS activists also vandalised the office of state congress spokesman Sanjay Nirupam at Andheri in northwest Mumbai. Nirupam has been a vocal supporter of the north Indian cause.
