New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Delhi Congress chief J.P. Aggarwal have expressed anguish over the attack on north Indians in Mumbai.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena led by Raj Thackeray has been carrying out an extensive campaign against the north Indians in the state.
MNS workers Sunday attacked non-Maharashtrians appearing for a railway board recruitment examination. Thackeray was arrested early Tuesday.
A joint statement issued by Dikshit and Aggarwal said that parochial ideology and violence should be condemned very strongly.
“Ours is a democracy and every citizen has the fundamental freedom to reside anywhere and avail of opportunities. After 60 years of independence, such divisive actions to undermine our unity, integrity and harmony are really dangerous,” the statement said.
The 40-year-old Thackeray – an amateur cartoonist known till less than a year ago essentially as Bal Thackeray’s nephew who split from the Shiv Sena to form the MNS – was charged with provoking hatred among communities as well as rioting, assault and damage to property after his supporters Sunday added another chapter to their campaign against non-Maharashtrians.
