CPI-M to protest India-US naval exercise

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Thursday said the party would organise protests all along the west coast of the country against the India-US Naval exercises being conducted in the Arabian Sea, known as “Malabar Exercises”.

The main feature of the exercise would involve US naval ships led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan.

The protests would be held in four states – Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala, the party said.

All the members of the CPI-M politburo, including S. Ramachandran Pillai, V.S. Achuthanandan, Pinayari Vijayan, Brinda Karat and K. Varadarajan will address the planned rallies.

The India-US exercise from Oct 24, the government says, is aimed at deriving benefit from the experiences of the two navies, which have significant convergence of interests, especially in the maintenance of maritime security in this region.
