Pakistan, US sign $339m agreements to assist Pakistan’s development

Islamabad : The United States would provide assistance worth over 339 million dollars to Pakistan during the next one year for promotion of economic and social sectors.

The two countries signed six agreements in Islamabad on Friday to strengthen cooperation in education, economic growth, governance, health and population welfare, earthquake reconstruction program and tribal regions development program.

For education sector, the United States would provide about 129 million dollars to strengthen and improve basic and higher education program.

It will further enhance the need and merit based scholarships program with the collaboration of Higher Education Commission.

The financial assistance under Governance amounting to over 23 million dollars would be spent for improvement of justice system, civil participation and media freedom, improvement in electoral process and decentralization program.

The allocations worth 76.5 million dollars for health and population welfare would ensure improvement of reproductive health, HIV AIDS, TB control, maternal and child health and water supply and sanitation in different parts of the country.

Under economic growth the United States would provide 43.5 million dollars to ensure the economic stability in areas like trade and investment, infrastructure, agriculture, private sector
competitiveness and strengthening of micro enterprises productivity.

The United States would provide 48.5 million dollars to further enhance the technical assistance and capacity building in the quake affected areas besides its utilization for construction and procurement.

The US would provide 20.5 million rupees during the year under tribal Development Program worth 750 million dollars.

The funds would be used for service delivery, good governance, infrastructure, economic growth, health and education in the area.
