Beijing : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani with his active role in the 7th summit of Asia-Europe Meeting received a lot of appreciation from the leaders of the participating countries for effectively projecting his country’s position on the issues relating to war on terror and economic recession.
He was warmly received by the world leaders, since it was Pakistan’s first appearance at the level of head of government, after its formal admission in the group, comprising two continents, Asia and Europe that represents 60 percent of the world population.
His speech at the first plenary session was highly appreciated by the participants, that spelt out concerns and priorities of the government of Pakistan in regard to war on terror and the worldwide financial turmoil that also affected the Pakistani people.
Gilani appeared as a dynamic and pro-active leader in dealing with the new challenges, said a spokesman of the conference while talking to APP.
The speech of Prime Minister Gilani helped to understand the true perception of the government in regard to financial turmoil and global war against terrorism, he added.
German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel in her opening remarks at a meeting with the Prime Minister Saturday specially mentioned his speech, stating it clearly indicated Pakistan’s position on the challenges, faced by the newly democratically elected government.
The speech of the Prime Minister on the topic of international economic and financial situation on Friday, highlighted the available economic potential of Pakistan to overcome its financial difficulties and its expectations from the world community to address common issues, particularly the financial turmoil and the threat to peace and security.
Prime Minister Gilani had hectic engagements during the two-day summit. On Saturday, he attended the 2nd plenary session that addressed the issues relating to food security, disaster preparedness and management.
He availed the opportunity to have extensive interactions with Asian and European leaders. He attended the dinner hosted by Chinese Premier last night during which he had informal exchange of views with the participants.
He had a number of sideline meetings with the participating heads of government and the States, including Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Vice Prime Minister of Czech Republic, Alexandr Vondra, Italian Prime Minister Salvio Berluscon, Japanese Prime Minister Aso Taro and German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel.
It may be mentioned here that PM Gilani also received special hospitality from the Chinese government during his stay in Beijing. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao welcomed his presence in the summit meeting, and most particularly Pakistan’s formal entry into ASEM forum.
Premier Wen Jiabao personally received him when Gilani arrived at the Great Hall of the People (Venue of the gathering) warmly greeting and shaking hands with him at the opening session. He also held interaction with Chinese and international media.
Before leaving home on Saturday evening, Prime Minister was scheduled to meet the Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and Chairman Chinese People Political Consultative Conference Jia Qingling.
