Nepal’s PM pledges to protect labour rights

By Xinhua,

Kathmandu : Nepal’s Prime Minister and chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Pushpa Kumal Dahal Prachanda Sunday promised to protect the rights of trade unions.

Inaugurating a National Trade Union Conference organised by the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre here, Dahal said he would present a proposal in the Constituent Assembly (CA) to ensure the labourers’ rights, Nepal’s news agency RSS reported.

Split of the trade union is the split of labourers, he said, adding that the CA and the council of ministers have taken the labourers’ issues positively.

Trade union should help consolidate the collaboration and consensus among the political parties, he said.

Utilising the available natural resources to the fullest, the government is committed to developing infrastructure, promoting tourism and water resources and building a new Nepal, he said.

As industrialists seek more profit and workers want better wages, “rights of trade unions can be established through coordination between the two sides”, he said.

However, industrialists are against the government’s unilateral announcement of wages.

The two-day conference will discuss issues such as labour law, setting up of a labour commission, minimum wages, employment opportunities, women labour and foreign employment, among others.
