Rahul was given full security cover, says Uttar Pradesh government

Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government Sunday denied reports of alleged lapses in the security of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to Kanpur.

State Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh refuted charges levelled by the Congress leadership and the central government that Gandhi was denied the high security that he is entitled to.

“No sooner the union home ministry made queries in this regard, the director general of police promptly instituted an inquiry and the report submitted by the additional director general (security) makes it absolutely clear that Rahul Gandhi was accorded full SPG (Special Protection Group) cover to which he is entitled,” Singh told reporters.

“Chief minister (Mayawati) has always been very particular about ensuring proper security for both UPA (united progressive alliance) chairperson Sonia Gandhi as well as for her son Rahul. So, there is no question of any lapse on that front at any time,” he said.

Referring to the last-minute cancellation of Gandhi’s programme in Chandra Shekhar Azad Agriculture University at Kanpur Friday, Singh reiterated the government’s earlier stand that they had nothing to do with that.

“The state government is in no way connected with the affairs of any university, which are autonomous bodies. So, whatever confusion occurred was on account of communication gap between the vice chancellor and the organisers,” he asserted.
