Half of Agra powerless as transformer catches fire

By IANS,

Agra : Power supply in Agra has been badly affected due to a fire at the Sikandra sub-station on the Delhi-Agra road.

The 220 KV sub-station that supplies power to various other sub-stations was damaged beyond repair Sunday night even as half a dozen fire tenders struggled for several hours to put out the fire.

Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister Ramvir Upadhyaya reached the site and ordered immediate replacement of the damaged transformer.

Power supply officials, however, said it could take a week to restore normalcy.

“Till then, the city will have to bear with erratic and inadequate power supply,” the officials said.

The SN Medical College, and the district and central jails were badly affected due to power cuts.

Sub-stations in Sanjay Place commercial complex, Shastripuram, Jaipur House, Loha Mandi, Raja ki mandi, Dayalbagh and Kamla Nagar have been affected by the fire.

“With weather being hot and sultry, it will be a real tough time for the people of Agra,” said Sudhir Gupta, a resident of Vijay Nagar colony.
